Klemmy and the Hornets

Here is Keiki, our first baby girl. She is an angelic sleeper, a champion cuddler, a loud snorer, and extremely loyal. She would be with her people all the time if she could, which is very endearing. She is our beautiful blonde girl.

Keiki is an amazing long distance runner. She is my protector on the trails, and a great training buddy. And did I mention she loves to sleep?

Keiki is our trail leader, our trail blazer. She is not the most agile or graceful dog out there. She plows through everything, and ends up covered in thorns and other debris by the end of a run. This never seems to ruin her mood, or her amazing ability to curl up for a nap once we get home.

And then there is sweet Klementine. Klemmy has come so far since we adopted her. She is as brilliant and sweet as always, and is now brimming with confidence. She is much more alert and coordinated than her sister, and has an amazing vertical jump. She adores her sister Keiki and is her little tag-along. She loves to follow her everywhere.

Klemmy also has the cutest underbite. It is especially noticeable if you scratch or rub her ears, as shown in the picture below.

This weekend, Klemmy made the mistake of being a tag-along as Keiki plowed over a log with a hornets nest in it, when we were all out on the Continental Divide Trail. Keiki blasted through, overturned the log, and ran ahead, oblivious of the chaos she had created behind her. Klemmy, being a few steps behind, was left to fend for herself among the angry hornets. Luckily I was behind everyone, so I could see what had happened, and could try to help. My poor little Klemmy was covered in hornets, and her ears and legs were bitten several times. I was trying to brush all of them off of her, but some of them would not let go. It was terrible! One of her ears was especially fat (like a wrestler's cauliflower ear!) and painful to the touch all day.

After Keiki trampled the nest, Chad and I tried to find another way back to our car, so we would not have to pass by the angry hornets again. No such luck. So we ended up hiking off of the trail for a bit. All four of us were tired when we got home. Little Klem was better after some pampering, and after downing a couple of Benadryl tablets disguised in peanut butter.
